Gapped teeth are not an uncommon occurrence. Although it may not be what you want to see when you look in the mirror, you’re not the only one to experience what is known as diastema. However, you also don’t have to continue to live with added space between your teeth. There are several solutions available that can close the gap and create a newer, more beautiful appearance. Read on to learn more about this condition and what you can do to address it.

What is Diastema?

In the simplest terms, diastema is when a gap forms between your teeth. Although the situation is harmless, it can become problematic when it comes to maintaining your oral health.

Bacteria and food particles can easily become trapped in these gaps, making it hard to avoid decay and gum disease, especially if you’re not brushing and flossing regularly.

What Causes Diastema?

There are several reasons why diastema occurs, some of which include:

  • Depending on the size of your teeth and jawbone, a gap may occur (i.e., teeth are too small for the bone)
  • If you have missing teeth or those that are much smaller than others, a gap can form.
  • If you have an enlarged lip tie or labial frenum, which is the band of tissue that exists behind the upper lip and attaches to the gum tissue above your upper front two teeth.
  • You are suffering from advanced gum disease, causing your teeth to shift and become loose.
  • You push your tongue against your top row of teeth when swallowing.
  • Your child loses their baby teeth are and waiting for their permanent ones to erupt (this is only temporary)

Ways to Treat Diastema

Living with a gap between your upper front two teeth does not have to be your reality. Instead, you can talk to your dentist about possible treatment options that may include:

  • Veneers – Thin sheath tooth coverings are custom-made based on your desired shape, size, and color to conceal the gap and create a more uniform smile.
  • Orthodontics – Using traditional braces or Invisalign, the gap between your teeth can be closed with the help of clear plastic aligners or metal brackets and wires working to bring your teeth closer together.
  • Dental Implants – If you have a tooth that is missing, your dentist can fill in the gap by placing a dental implant into the vacant socket.
  • Dental Bridge – If you prefer a non-surgical method to treat your tooth loss, a dental bridge can be created to bridge the gap and create a full, complete appearance.
  • Gum Disease Treatment – By removing plaque and tartar from the gums through scaling and root planing, your dentist can treat the infection and help to eliminate the gap.

Closing the gap between your teeth doesn’t have to be a difficult process. Take the time to talk to your dentist and find a solution that works for you.
